2018 School leadershttp://www.immac-heart.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/2018captains.aspx2018 School leaders
Last Thursday was a tremendous occasion for the school as we commissioned our Year 6 leaders for 2018. All students will be challenged with numerous leadership opportunities throughout the year and I have been very impressed with the way they have conducted themselves so far this year.

A great initiative that will commence in Term 2 will be our “Leading Leaders” program with older students from both St Mary’s College and St Edmunds College. The program will run after school on a Wednesday afternoon and provide support for our School Captains as they take up their leadership responsibilities in our Learning, Pastoral, Sport and Environmental Ministries for 2018. We believe this will provide significant support to our captains in developing their leadership styles and create great opportunities for our community in these areas.

Congratulations to our captains for 2018:

School Captains: Josh Avenell and Mira Johnston

Pastoral Captains: Eliza O'Dell and Godwin Augustin

Learning Captains: Alan Phillott and Lilianna Baker-Robinson

Sport Captains: Cooper Bradley and Kate Rynkiewicz

Environmental Captains: Ava Currey and Laney Heit

Another initiative with St Mary’s and St Edmunds will be our “Leading Learners” program which will also begin in Term 2 and is available to all students from Year 2 – Year 6. The Leading Learners program will provide support for students on a Wednesday afternoon in homework tasks and assignments and also prioritise the skill of reading during this time. More information will follow in the coming weeks but I would like to thank both Mr Diarmuid O’Riordan (Principal St Edmunds College) and Mrs Judith Finan (Principal St Mary’s College) and their staff for helping create these opportunities for the students of Immaculate Heart.

Immac-Heart Wellbeing Weekhttp://www.immac-heart.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/HealthyHomes.aspxImmac-Heart Wellbeing Week

This week our learning is as important as ever as we take the time to stop and reflect upon the conditions we need to truly engage with all the wonderful opportunities of learning around us. We know we need to be in the right headspace to make the most of our school day. We need plenty of sleep, healthy breakfasts and to get to school on time. This is sometimes challenging especially when life is busier than ever and there are many pressures upon families to keep up with the world that has become so complex.

BELONGING

There are ways to help support families to thrive including becoming a connected member of our school community. Belonging to a community is key to family wellbeing and when your children see you connecting with their school, it reassures them that there are many significant adults who are there to support them. Being a catholic school, Immaculate Heart’s approach to student education is holistic. We plan learning which targets students’ academic, spiritual, emotional, creative and wellbeing needs. Academic support is only taken up when students know their teachers genuinely care about their whole being, health and happiness.

KIDSMATTERS & BEYOND BLUE

Another form of support are organisations like Kidsmatter which offer information for families such as practical and helpful ideas to deal with matters at the heart of the family. They offer direction to where families can turn to for further support. The following website will take you to the specific page for families: https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/healthy-homes . Issues on this page include: building resilience, resilience in families, developing optimism, establishing boundaries, resolving family conflict, family break up, loss and grief, supporting healthy habits, and personal stories.

ICAS COMPETITION:

ICAS is an independent, skills-based assessment program which recognises and rewards student achievement. The assessments comprise Digital Technologies, English, Maths, Science, Spelling and Writing. Over one million student entries are accepted from over 6,300 schools in Australia and New Zealand annually. In addition, students from over 20 countries including Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA participate in ICAS each year. Immaculate Heart Students from Years 2-6 are once again invited to take up the challenge of the ICAS competition. Your student will receive a letter with a permission slip and the cost of each test soon. Students who participate will sit tests in school time. These tests are marked by ICAS and certificates of achievement are presented to the students later in the year. Some of our students received high distinctions in various tests last year, so we are excited to see what great things will be achieved this year. For further information visit: https://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/
